How it works

Military time is just 24-hour time: the hours run 00 through 23 instead of restarting at 12. Midnight is the weird one — 12 AM is 0000, and noon is 1200. Everything else is add or subtract 12.

To read military time, subtract 12 from any hour over 12 and call it PM: 1700 = 5:00 PM, 0900 = 9:00 AM. To go the other way, add 12 to PM hours: 5:00 PM = 1700. Minutes never change.

The converter above handles exact times too, not just whole hours:

  • 5:17 PM = 1717
  • 17:17 = 5:17 PM
  • 0515 = 5:15 AM
  • 17:30 or 17.30 = 5:30 PM

A few worth memorizing:

  • 1:00 PM = 1300
  • 3:30 PM = 1530
  • 5:00 PM = 1700
  • 9:45 PM = 2145
  • 12:00 AM = 0000
  • 12:00 PM = 1200

The full step-by-step is on the military time rules page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert military time?

If the hour is 00, it is 12:00 AM. Hours 0111 use the same hour with AM, 12 is 12:00 PM, and hours 1323 become PM by subtracting 12. Minutes stay the same. For example, 1700 is 5:00 PM and 0900 is 9:00 AM.

What is 17:00 in regular time?

17:00 is 5:00 PM in standard time. In military form it is written 1700.

What time is 18:00 in regular time?

18:00 is 6:00 PM. Subtract 12 from 18 to get 6 PM.

How do you convert PM time to military time?

Add 12 to the PM hour (except 12 PM stays 1200). 5:00 PM plus 12 is 1700. 11:59 PM becomes 2359. Keep minutes the same.

What is 30 minutes in military time?

30 minutes is not a complete time of day on its own — it is the minute part of a time. For example, 5:30 PM is 1730 and 00:30 is 0030 (12:30 AM).
